Notice of Closure of The Ford Counselling & Psychotherapy Centre
We regretfully announce the closure of The Ford Counselling & Psychotherapy Centre (“The Ford”, previously
known as Family Life Service Fern CLG), a counselling and psychotherapy charity that has played an essential
role in providing mental health services within County Wexford for over 30 years. Our counselling services will
cease on 30th Nov 2023.
The decision to close The Ford was complex, driven by a range of challenges, including financial constraints and
evolving operational needs. Despite the very generous support of local fundraising initiatives, inadequate annual
guaranteed funding has proved to be a relentless issue that we have grappled with, causing severe strain on our
organisation’s ability to carry out our mission effectively. Our resources and capacity are simply not enough to
cope with the financial, managerial and administrative challenges.
Our voluntary board members have demonstrated exceptional responsibility and integrity in navigating these
challenges and finally arriving at this extremely difficult conclusion. We also want to acknowledge the
incredible hard work, dedication, and commitment of all the staff and counsellors who have given so much to
The Ford. As we transition through this period, we are committed to providing the support and information
required to ensure as seamless a conclusion as possible to our current arrangements with clients and staff.
There is an increasing acknowledgement that mental health is as essential as physical health to human well being. However, there is an over-reliance on charitable organisations to provide these mental health services.
To be truly sustainable and equitable, a mental health service accessible by all needs to be integrated into the
national healthcare system.
Over the years, The Ford has been privileged to collaborate with stakeholders and individuals who share our
unwavering commitment to enhancing mental health and well-being across the county and beyond. Their
generosity and support, both financial and emotional, has been a cornerstone in our mission to provide a vital
service to those seeking help.
In closing, we want to express our profound gratitude to everyone who contributed in any way to The Ford. This
organisation has been a lifeline for many, and its spirit will live on in the legacy of care, compassion and support
collectively fostered by the board, the staff, the stakeholders, and every single individual involved.
